The Perfect Axe is a hand-forged boy's axe rooted in William Kelly's iconic 1885 design — built from 5160 high-carbon U.S. steel, available in 19" or 28" Tennessee Hickory handles, and 100% made in the USA.

William Kelly designed this axe in 1885 and the geometry hasn't changed since — because it didn't need to. The layered bevels are functional, not decorative: they reduce drag through the cut and give you a consistent angle to sharpen against. At 2.25 lbs with a 19" handle, it's a true boy's axe — quick in the hand, easy to pack, and more capable than its size suggests. The 28" handle adds reach and two-hand power for heavier work.

Features:

  • Hand-forged from premium 5160 high-carbon U.S. steel — the same grade used in blades and springs that must hold up under hard, sustained use.
  • Kelly's iconic 1885 layered bevel geometry: reduces drag through the cut and makes re-sharpening faster and more consistent.
  • Weighs just 2.25 lbs — light enough for all-day use, balanced for precision.
  • Tennessee Hickory handle — absorbs shock better than fiberglass, with a natural grip that improves with use.
  • Available with a USA-made genuine leather blade mask (not a slip cover — a real guard built to last).
  • Replacement handles available separately — this axe is designed to be maintained and handed down, not discarded.

Warwood Tool has been making professional-grade hand tools in West Virginia since 1854. The Perfect Axe is still forged in small batches, the same way it always has been.

Available Options:

  • 19" Hickory Handle — Perfect House / Boy's Axe (compact, one-hand control, ideal for camp, trail, and kindling)
  • 28" Hickory Handle — Perfect Boy's Axe (full two-hand swing, more reach and power for firewood and sustained work)
  • USA Leather Mask — add a handmade American leather blade guard to either configuration

Ships FREE to the 48 contiguous states. 30-day returns. Inventory is limited — forged in small batches and regularly sells out.

5160 is a chromium-vanadium high-carbon alloy — the same grade used in heavy-duty springs and blades that take repeated impact without chipping or losing their edge. It's tougher than most tool steels at comparable hardness, and it responds well to hand-forging in ways that cast or stamped heads can't replicate.

Each head is forged and heat-treated for the right balance of hardness and toughness. Hard enough to hold an edge through real work. Tough enough not to chip or crack under impact. That's why Warwood tools show up in forestry, construction, firefighting, and ironworking — trades where a tool failure isn't just inconvenient.

The layered bevels on the Perfect Axe head go back to William Kelly's 1885 patent. They do three practical things:

  • Reduced drag: The geometry lets the head part wood more cleanly, with less resistance on the return stroke.
  • Better balance: Removing material in the right places shifts weight toward the cutting edge where it actually does work.
  • Easier sharpening: The consistent bevel angle gives you a reliable guide when re-profiling the edge — no guesswork.

The design has been in continuous production for nearly 140 years. A lot of axe designs have come and gone in that time. This one stayed.

Keep up with basic maintenance and this axe will be around long after you are. Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • After each use: Wipe the head dry. A light coat of oil or blade wax prevents surface rust and keeps the steel protected.
  • Edge maintenance: Use a mill bastard file for heavy re-profiling, a sharpening stone for regular touch-ups. Work with the bevel, not against it.
  • Handle care: The Tennessee Hickory handle benefits from an occasional coat of linseed oil or our Perfect Wax to prevent drying and cracking, especially in dry climates.
  • Storage: Always store with the blade mask on. Keep in a dry location — moisture is the enemy of both the steel and the handle.
  • Re-handling: Replacement handles are available directly from Warwood. If the handle ever cracks or loosens, it can be replaced — this axe is not disposable.

Preserve your blade for decades with Perfect Wax — our all-natural blade care, also 100% made in the USA.
