- New handle (appropriate size for your axe or hammer head)
- Axe or hammer head
- Wooden wedge
- Hammer or mallet
- Saw or chisel (for trimming excess wood)
- Warwood Tool Metal Wedges - Small or Large (optional, for additional security)
- Wood glue (optional, for added stability)
This user manual will guide you through the steps necessary to properly install your handle correctly, ensuring a secure and durable fit for your tools.
Step 1: Remove the Old Handle
1. Secure the axe or hammer head in a vise or clamp.
2. Use a saw or chisel to carefully cut or chisel away the old handle, being cautious not to damage the tool head.
Step 2: Fit the New Handle
- Insert the new handle into the eye of the tool head. The handle should fit snugly and will likely require a strong force to insert it.
- TIP: If needed, hold the handle upside down and strike the bottom of the handle with a mallet. This will help drive the handle further into the eye.
- If necessary, sand or shave the handle to achieve a proper fit.
Step 3: Secure the Handle with a Wooden Wedge
- If using a wooden wedge, apply wood glue to the wedge for added stability (Optional).
- Insert the wooden wedge into the top of the handle, aligning it with the grain of the wood.
- Tap the wooden wedge into place with a hammer or mallet until it is fully seated
Step 4: Trim Excess Wood
- If any wood is protruding from the top of the tool head, use a saw or chisel to carefully trim the excess.
- Sand the trimmed area to smooth any rough edges.
Step 5: Install the Metal Wedge (Optional)
- Select the appropriate size round/flat metal wedge (small or large) for your tool.
- Position the metal wedge over the center of the handle's top end, where the wooden wedge was inserted (if used).
- Using a hammer or mallet, gently tap the metal wedge into the handle. Be sure to drive it in straight and evenly to avoid splitting the wood.
- Continue tapping the wedge until it is flush with the handle top and securely in place.
Step 6: Final Check
- Inspect the tool to ensure the handle is firmly secured and there are no gaps between the tool head and the handle.
- Give the tool a few test swings to confirm the handle is secure and the wedge is holding properly.
Safety Precautions
- Always wear safety goggles and gloves when handling and installing tool wedges.
- Ensure the tool head is securely clamped or held in place while working on it.
- Use caution when cutting or chiseling to avoid injury.
Maintenance Tips:
- Periodically check the handle and wedges for any signs of loosening or wear.
- If the handle becomes loose over time, re-tighten the wedges or replace them if necessary.
- Store your tools in a dry place to prevent moisture from affecting the handle and wedges.
By following these instructions, you can ensure your axe or hammer is securely handled and ready for use.
