What Is a Ball Pein Hammer?
A ball pein hammer has a flat or slightly crowned striking face on one end and a rounded pein on the other. The ball concentrates contact without the straight ridge left by a wedge-shaped pein.
It is commonly used for rounding rivet ends, peening and expanding metal, forming curves, seating parts and general fabrication or machine-shop work. The round end can move material in multiple directions around the point of contact.

What Is a Cross Pein Hammer?
A cross pein hammer has a wedge-shaped pein whose ridge runs perpendicular to the handle. The narrow contact line concentrates force and spreads metal primarily away from that line.
Blacksmiths use cross peins to draw stock, isolate material and work in areas where a broad hammer face would move too much metal. Smaller cross peins can also help start small nails or tacks where fingers would be close to the work.
What Is a Straight Pein Hammer?
A straight pein hammer turns the wedge 90 degrees so its ridge runs parallel with the handle. This changes the direction in which the blow spreads material and can improve access along edges, shoulders or narrow areas.
