Double-Face Sledgehammer

Cross Pein Sledge
A cross pein sledge has one conventional striking face and a wedge-shaped pein running perpendicular to the handle. The pein concentrates force across a narrower area.
Blacksmiths use the pein to draw out and spread metal. Heavier cross pein sledges can also shape brick or stone, perform heavy shop work and strike punches or chisels with the flat face. The pein is a working and shaping end—not a striking face for hitting another tool.
What Weight Sledgehammer Should You Use?
Choose the lightest sledgehammer that can deliver the required result with controlled blows. More head weight can increase impact, but only when the user can accelerate the head, place the strike accurately and recover safely.
2.5- to 4-Pound Sledges
These compact sledges bridge the gap between a conventional hammer and a full-size sledgehammer. They are useful for striking punches and chisels, driving smaller stakes, breaking limited sections of masonry and performing controlled shop work.
6- to 8-Pound Sledges

For Driving Stakes, Posts or Spikes
A double-face sledge provides a broad striking surface. Choose weight based on the size of the driven object and the resistance of the ground or material. Accuracy matters: glancing blows can damage the target and place the user off balance.
For Punches, Chisels and Shop Work
A lighter or short-handle sledge often provides better control. Confirm that the punch, chisel or struck tool is designed for the force being applied and inspect both striking surfaces for damage before use.

Inspect the head, handle and attachment before every use. Do not use a sledgehammer with a loose head, cracked handle, mushroomed face, chipped edge or other visible damage.
Establish a clear swing path and stable footing. Keep other people outside the working area and account for flying debris, rebound and material that may shift after impact. Wear appropriate eye, hand, hearing and foot protection for the job.
Strike squarely with the center of the face. Do not strike with the side of the head or use a pein as though it were a conventional striking face. Never strike two hardened hammer faces together.
